John Grisham Menulis dengan Iman
Ketika mulai menulis, John Grisham membuat keputusan sederhana untuk menjaga agar tetap jernih berkarya berdasarkan iman dan gaya hidupnya sebagai orang Kristen. Dia tidak pernah tergoda untuk menulis di luar keyakinannya.
John Grisham. Tak ada yang meragukan keluwesannya meramu kata yang mampu mengaduk perasaan pembaca. Bukan pesan dan konsep tentang kehidupan saja yang menjadi kekuatan novelnya. Imajinasi dan penggambaran detail berbagai kasus hukum membuat pembaca seolah-olah berada dekat dengan tokoh atau malah menjadi tokoh itu sendiri. Merasakan konflik si tokoh yang penuh warna, saat takut, marah, cemas, dendam, bahagia, frustrasi, atau dalam kondisi sangat terpojok. Ketegangan dibangun perlahan. Sulit meraba akhir ceritanya. Ini yang membuat pencinta Grisham penasaran.
Hingga 2004, Grisham telah menghasilkan 17 buku yang sudah diterjemahkan ke 29 bahasa. Tujuh novelnya telah difilmkan. Sebut saja The Firm yang dibintangi Tom Cruise, The Pelican Brief dengan pemeran utama Julia Roberts dan Denzel Washington. Sedangkan film yang baru saja diputar di bioskop Indonesia adalah Runaway Juri yang dibintangi John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, dan Rachel Weisz.
Dalam sebuah wawancara Grisham membuka rahasia tulisannya. "Setiap mulai menulis, saya membuat keputusan sederhana untuk menjaga agar tulisan saya tetap jernih berdasarkan iman Kristen dan gaya hidup yang saya jalani," kata Grisham. "Saya tidak pernah tergoda untuk menulis di luar itu," dia menambahkan.
Grisham lahir di Jonesboro, Arkansas, 8 Februari 1955. Dia dibesarkan dalam keluarga yang hidup pas-pasan. Sebagai kontraktor bangunan, ayahnya sering memboyong mereka ke berbagai kota di pedalaman bagian Selatan AS. Keluarga Grisham baru menetap di Mississippi pada 1967.
Sebagai keluarga Baptis yang taat, ibu tidak mempercayai televisi. Grisham mengisi masa kanak-kanak dan remajanya dengan membaca berbagai buku. Setiap ke kota baru, mereka selalu mengunjungi perpustakaan dan meminjam sebanyak mungkin buku. Ibunya mengajarkan anak-anaknya membaca sejak dini, membacakan buku untuk satu sama lain, dan ibunya tidak pernah berhenti membacakan buku buat mereka.
Ibu juga yang sangat berpengaruh besar dalam kehidupan rohani Grisham. Dia ingat saat bertanya banyak hal tentang Tuhan waktu duduk di bangku kelas tiga sekolah dasar. "Kita berbicara dan Ibu saya membawa saya menerima Yesus," kata dia. Pada hari Minggu, Grisham kecil dengan bangga mengatakan pada banyak orang tentang keyakinannya pada Yesus Kristus. Mungkin ini bukan kejadian yang luar biasa pada anak berusia delapan tahun. "Tapi itu adalah saat terpenting dalam hidupku," kata Grisham.
Sebenarnya, Grisham tidak pernah bercita-cita menjadi penulis apalagi novelis. Dia mempersiapkan diri menjadi pemain bisbol profesional sejak usia enam sampai 20 tahun. Waktu yang tak singkat memang untuk menyadari bahwa dia tidak punya cukup talenta di bidang itu. Namun, cintanya pada bisbol tak pernah luntur. Sampai sekarang Grisham membantu sebuah perkumpulan di Virginia dengan membangun lapangan bisbol dan menghabiskan sebagian waktunya untuk memangkas rumput dan mengurusi berbagai keperluan bisbol. Dia juga melatih klub kecil putranya Ty dan sudah membawa tim kecil ini mengikuti pelatihan musim panas di Florida agar mereka merasakan berlaga di pertandingan besar.
Grisham belajar akuntansi di Universitas Mississippi dan menamatkan sekolah hukumnya di universitas yang sama pada 1981. Selesai kuliah dia membuka biro hukum kecil di Southaven, Mississippi. Setelah bertahun-tahun menjadi pengacara dan menduduki jabatan penting di bidang hukum di Mississippi, Grisham mulai menemukan hobi baru: menulis.
Selama tiga tahun dia datang ke kantornya dari jam lima hingga tujuh pagi selama enam hari per minggu untuk menulis novel pertamanya A Time to Kill. Naskah pertamanya ditolak 28 penerbit dan akhirnya diterbitkan oleh penerbit yang tidak terkenal. Meski penjualannya mengecewakan, cuma lima ribu kopi, dia tetap menulis novel keduanya.
Karier sebagai pengarang novel berkembang di usia 36 tahun, ketika hak cipta novel keduanya The Firm dibeli oleh perusahaan film Paramount Pictures dengan bayaran besar, meski buku ini belum menemukan penerbit. Selanjutnya The Firm terjual lebih dari tujuh juta kopi dan bertengger di daftar buku terlaris New York Times selama 47 minggu.
Keberhasilan The Firm membuat Grisham memutuskan untuk meninggalkan kariernya sebagai pengacara dan menutup biro hukumnya. Dia memboyong keluarganya pindah ke Oxford, Mississippi, dan mencurahkan pikirannya pada tulisan dan keluarganya.
Ketenaran tak membuat Grisham berubah. Dia, Renee istrinya, serta dua putra mereka memilih menetap di Mississippi dan Virgina. "Kita berusaha untuk hidup sederhana dan menjauh dari Hollywood, New York, dan semua tempat yang menarik perhatian."
Sebaliknya kesuksesannya membuat Grisham dan Renee yang berasal dari keluarga menengah ini menemukan banyak hal. Mereka menyumbang pada gereja, yayasan amal, dan lembaga sejenis. Grishan dan Renee juga membagi waktunya mengikuti perjalanan misi dan menjadi donatur dalam kegiatan tersebut. Greatness

A soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.

What Children Deserve

It must be an ashram where men have gathered for the highest end of life, in the peace of nature; where life is not merely meditative, but fully awake in its activities; where children`s minds are not being perpetually drilled into believing that the idolatry of their nation is the truest ideal for them to accept; where they are bidden to realize man`s world as God`s kingdom, to whose citizenship they have to aspire; where the sunrise and sunset and the silent glory of stars are not daily ignored; where nature`s festivities of flowers and fruit have their joyous recognition; and where the young and the old, the teacher and the student, sit at the same table to take their daily food and the food of their eternal life.

Are You God's Wife?
New York City: It's a cold day in December. A little boy about 10-year-old was standing before a shoe store on Broadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold. A lady approached the boy and said, "My little fellow, why are you looking so earnestly in that window?"
"I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes," was the boy's reply.
The lady took him by the hand and went into the store, and asked the clerk to get a half dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her. She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with a towel.
By this time the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she then purchased him a pair of shoes, and tying up the remaining pairs of socks, gave them to him. She patted him on the head and said, "No doubt, my little fellow, you feel more comfortable now?"
As she turned to go, the astonished lad caught her by the hand, and looking up in her face, with tears in his eyes, answered the question with these words: "Are you God's wife?"

Fill me with faithfulness, so that I place my mind, heart and all that I do in the service of your Gospel.
